The other thing that wasnt apparent to me was that the various applications that I had to install on my PC to use with my ScanSnaps werent compatible in any way with the VueScan driver. The application I used to scan photos was actually called ScanSnap Photo Gallery, but that app was really one of many other photo-management applications. I dont know what people use them for, but they are installed by default when you buy a ScanSnap. If the manufacturers of these scanners made all of their drivers compatible with a single driver, then install of the scanners and third-party apps would be much simpler.

Overall, VueScan is a very easy to use application, but there are a few things that are very confusing. And while I havent had a specific problem with VueScan on my Dell, I have seen it cause the customer service people to have a hard time dealing with it.

And VueScan seems to have a simple UI that includes many features that we all are accustomed to. But since VueScan is so simple, you may not recognize how to use it. In addition, the learning curve for VueScan may be too high for some people. This is especially true if you arent a very sophisticated photographer or technician. If you have a friend who also uses ScanSnap/Smart Scan, you can work together to get everyone up and running in a few minutes.

I recently purchased a EPSON L26, which was the very first DPP in this class, and have been trying out VueScan to see how it compares. The manual that came with the machine was very good, but VueScan’s manual is by comparison to this manual, much better. It contains excellent pictures, tips and instructions. It’s a bit pricey, but it’s not like you can carry it around with you. I really like the way it displays a preview of the scan and says “copy” when you’ve taken your copy (the closest I can get is “crop”, which is kind of misleading.) and that it will “fix bad scans” by placing the rollback dots on the edge of the scan. VueScan’s rollback feature is useful when you get the format wrong and cannot get it right without ruining the previous copy, as I did with my slide film. Another reason I like VueScan is that it is built to compare and contrast scans, you have the option of comparing just a single scan to the initial scan, or every single scan to a previous scan. You get a big number to compare it to, or a little red dot on the one you’re comparing to the other. You can also get a quick comparison to another scan if you go to the “new scan” button, and can scan again to compare if the settings are perfect. I think this feature is unique to VueScan and not found in the few other scanners I’ve used. I haven’t been able to get a comparison of the rollbacks that VueScan generates as an alternative to the Compare scans feature, but I think I can when I can get the film developed and make some prints.

Perhaps I’m missing something, but there doesn’t seem to be any new menu items – the only change I’ve noticed is in the Vuescan Book. I can’t see any tab for “Verification”, and the “Verification” tab doesn’t seem to have changed at all. This is a very minor point, but it just seems like a bug that it’s missing.

I bought Patch For VueScan on the basis that i could scan multiple images one one page with my old Canon Scanner that wont work with Wondows 10. When i tied I couldn’t. I was directed to separate page where I shoudl upload my scan to crop out the photos! I see this has as better fix now but i still cant see where to scan say 8 different sized photos with 8 different scanning resolutions and or colour settings applied. Its clunky and not a patch on Canon Scan Utility. The best effort is no shown here just look at the bizarre steps you have to go through to get a multiple scan, so un-intuitive!

If the photo-scan quality you’re getting from the software that came with your scanner is good enough for your purposes, there’s no reason to replace it. If you want better quality, you can almost certainly get it with either SilverFast or VueScan. However, which one will be the better choice will depend at least partly on the scanner you plan to use it with. If either program doesn’t support key features with your scanneras with VueScan not supporting multi-exposure with the Plustek 120and the other one does, the program that supports the features will be your best choice. If both programs support all the features with your scanner, then VueScan’s lower price makes it the obvious choice.

As a professional photographer, I’m not sure if this software really scratches my itch. The workflow is very complicated. I have to load my photos (which I have done through Adobe Bridge), highlight my photos and do a lot of tweaking. Then I can run the image through the software for the final scanning. I like the concept but I’ll have to be careful I don’t delete something important (even though I keep a backup drive). I use Nikon’s software, (which I have to update to work with the new Canon BMP files), so I’ve used VueScan before but not with the quality the Nikon scanner provides. I expect the quality will be fine and good if I carefully scan my images, but the process is very time consuming.
