One danger of the media and social media is the rapidity with which information travels. Sometimes, this is a good thing, but it can also mean that people hear the negative side of a story first. To me, Everest and other adventure sports are a way to bring people together in a way that provides entertainment, serves an educational purpose, improves well-being, and creates unique memories. If we can focus more time and energy on expanding the positive aspects of those experiences, we may find ourselves having a much more enjoyable time together.

In addition to the already mentioned social benefits, one of the most appealing aspects of climbing is the sense of scale. In addition to the daunting challenge of conquering the mountain, climbing Everest allows one to physically feel the long distance between us and the next life. The distance of the South Pole is 6,000 miles, but the distance between the South Pole and Mount Everest is less than 4,000 miles. And, the distance from the South Pole to Australia is 11,000 miles. Climbing Everest, and climbing to the other unexplored reaches of the world, provides a geographic workout, as well as an opportunity for a personal spiritual experience.

While our relationship with mountains is a passion, it is a passion that should be approached with respect. I think people will likely continue to climb Everest, but they will be much more conscious of the dangers involved and their responsibility to protect these fragile mountains.

Dr Casserley, who has summited Download Everest for 12 times, has seen summiters achieve the clinical picture of severe right ventricular hypoxemia, which many of the cardiovascular literature describes as an indicator of high altitude performance and endurance.

What is Everest?

What is Everest?

Everest’s Peak was, in fact, the highest point on Earth at the time. It became the base from which all other mountains’ heights were measured. Mount Everest is too high to be measured by sea level. Instead, earth’s gravity is measured along one side of the mountain to calculate its height. Everest’s height was 5,280 metres above sea level. A few weeks after that measurement, Charles Darwin published his observations from the Beagle voyage, in which he mentioned that the mountains of the Himalaya were “1000 miles west of the Equator”. This would place them at approximately 60 degrees west longitude, or twenty-nine degrees west of the Greenwich meridian.

It was a time of celebration, reflected in the faces of our team members and in the smiles of our partners and family members. How will we remember this day? Our memories will be refreshed with fondness and gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of something incredible. As we say goodbye to 2019, we leave with great memories. We leave with our heads held high knowing that we have played a unique and invaluable role in the life of this young organization. At Christmas, we’ll reflect on the blessings that have come our way, and we’ll vow to continue to play our part to make positive changes in the world, in our culture, and in the lives of others. We look forward to what next year will bring, and to the even greater things we’re sure it will. Most importantly, we’ll continue to be part of a movement bigger than any one of us, and that movement will forever be able to count on Everest to deliver on its promise.
